Strategies and Ideas

As an instructor, I think the best things I can do is:

  • Define student learning outcomes
  • Build meaningful relationships with my students
  • Customize teaching strategies to meet the needs of my students
  • Engage in ongoing assessment of student learning, self-examination/quality of teaching, and course design

Instructors, especially those who teach online, should be aware of and understand the use of emerging technologies in a variety of mediums for teaching and learning based on student needs.  I feel that when creating instructional material whether it is a class website, video tutorials, visual images, step-by-step diagrams, and so on; instructors should take into consideration all possible accessibility issues even if it means creating multiple methods of conveying a message or concept. I also feel that when designing these methods of instruction, instructors should take into consideration the different learning theories and strive to decrease cognitive load.

Instructors should make available multiple methods of teaching a concept, as well as resources (screen readers, etc.) that can aid students with disabilities such as those who are hearing impaired, and so on.  Taking into consideration the different disabilities possible and creating different methods of instruction to accommodate them in advance will save the instructor from having to create alternatives on the fly.

Ways I can be ADA compliant include:

  • Taking into consideration all accessibility issues that may come up for students
  • Create a navigation system that will ensure that my students will not get lost and can easily find what they need
  • Create multiple formats of instruction that include step-by-step instructional videos, step-by-step instructional documents, etc.
  • Include all policies, guidlines, detailed syllabus, and detailed class schedule
  • Make avenues for submitting assignments as easy as possible on the student
  • Post weekly announcements
  • All video files, audio files, images, and plug-ins should include an "alt" tag and complex graphics should be accompanied by detailed text descriptions. Video should include captions and audio files should include descriptions.
  • Include links to free resources that can benefit the student in terms of document and video viewing, etc.
