My Glossary and Resources

The following terms and resources are ones that I feel will not only help me, but will help my students as well.

My Teaching Terms

Asynchronous Learning - Opposite of synchronous learning, in which students participate in class work at different times instead of set times. Examples of asynchronous learning in an online environment inlcude participation in class discussions in which students post comments or reply to others and work on group projects at different times.

Collaboration - Working with other individuals together to reach a desired outcome. An example of collaboration is when students work together on a group project, whether it be asynchronously or synchronously.

Rubric - A scoring system that lists all criteria for completing a project or assignment successfully and includes total points possible for the entire project, as well as each part of the project. Rubrics can be used by instructors to evaluate a student's completed work, as well as self and peer assessment.

Synchronous Learning - Opposite of asynchronous learning in which learning occurs at the same time as others in real time. Whether it be online or in a face-to-face setting, times are scheduled and places are determined in regards to when and where students will meet either to listen to a lesson or work on projects collaboratively.

Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)/Course Management System (CMS) - A VLE or CMS is a type of application that acts as a container for courses and their content. Examples include Blackboard, Moodle, and eFront.

Web Accessibile - Online content that is easily accessed and understandable to anyone regardless of their disabilities. To learn more about Web accissibility, click here to visit the W3C Web Accessibility Initiative Website.
